Beat egg and gradually beat in sugar. Heat milk to lukewarm and beat into egg mixture. Dissolve yeast in the lukewarm water. Let stand a few minutes then stir until dissolved. Add yeast to egg mixture. Stir in spices, salt and butter. Gradually beat in flour and knead mixture on a lightly floured board until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise in a warm spot until double in size. Punch down and shape into a long thin roll about 36 inches long. Shape the long roll of dough into a large pretzel shape on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush twist with boiling water. Let rise until double in size. Brush with boiling water again. Bake in preheated oven at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes or less until twist is golden brown. Brush once during baking and after baking with boiling water.
This recipe was another winner the same year in the local newspaper cooking contest in which the Apple-stuffed Acorn Squash submitted by Ellen (and given to us by "Aunt Mary") won in the vegetable category.
